October 31st, 2008 Credit Crunch is all what I hear around me. It seems that the whole world has gone “Credit Crunch” mad…It has become the topic of the week the flavour of the month… I’ve lost count of the times I heard these two words come up in one sentence, from the barista who does the perfect cappuccino at the coffee bar next to my office, to the people who share the underground carriage with me to and from central London. Even my youngest daughter seems to have her own opinion about the credit crunch, “if I choose for you to buy me a cheaper dress will you get me the jumper I wanted, and then take me out for lunch?” she skillfully tried to negotiate with me when I took her out shopping over a week ago. I must admit that she got me thinking that afternoon about the snobbery we all suffer from. I mean how many of us would rather wear a designer label even if it meant that we had to spend half our wages on it, or even worse if it meant that we had to pay for it with our credit card; and why is it that none of us is willing to admit that we love shops which are kinder to our wallets?
My daughter’s comments stayed with me all afternoon, I wondered if she would still be thinking like this few years from now; when the pressures of fitting in as a teenager will spoil all that common sense that she had on this shopping afternoon. It even got me thinking about my spending habits and my snobbery towards some high street brands; and what does the credit crunch mean for a “shopping snob” like me?
I did follow my daughter’s advice, and she did get her cheaper dress… a jumper and the lunch she wanted.
So when it comes to the battle between designer clothes and high street brands, I have made my mind up and decided that I no longer wished to be a “shopping snob”; and thanks to so many high street shops who are currently obsessed with copying designer looks, I don’t really need to buy the real thing do I? So for now, I have gone all cheap and cheerful, and if you care to join me on my daily quest for catwalk designer looks at high street prices visit http://www.stilorama.com/ and shop happily ever after!
