How to become a Fashion Editor?

I bet you’ve typed this question on every search engine before landing on Stilorama Fashion Editor Blog. How to become a fashion editor? and what does it take to get there?
I’ve seen countless articles describing in details all the technical steps that might eventually lead you to your dream job, but I have never come across one column or article describing what the fashion world is really like. What are the highs and lows of this most sought after job? And does working for fashion magazines has any connection with Ugly Betty?
Well let me get the record straight. Working as a fashion editor for a magazine or for a newspaper is not the most glamorous job a person can have, and it is by no means the most paid one; one thing for sure though, it is the most competitive and sometimes back-stabbing business you can come across. It is a world of fake beauty and surreal idealism, where reality does not exist and where fashion editors, stylists, photographers, models and designers get together to create a perfect world for the very few. You only need to take a peak behind closed doors to realise how insecure and gullible the fashion world is really like. The job of a fashion editor is to make sure that this fragile insecurity is never revealed to anyone outside this precious fashion circle. So the show always goes on, no matter how frustrating a fashion editor’s career might be or how under paid and over competitive it is. A fashion editor’s job is always on the line, as he or she knows that there is always a young fashion editor waiting for their fall so they can claim the thrown all to themselves. A fashion editor must always look fascinated and interested in every product launch and every fashion show. We visit London Fashion Week to check out who’s wearing what,and who’s got a new freelance job or indeed who’s lost their job and is back freelancing now.
Now don’t take me wrong, I love my job as a fashion journalist and amongst all the chaos that surrounds me on a daily basis, I wouldn’t give it up.
As for those of you who are dying to know the secret of how to become a fashion editor? Well there are no secrets really, just few tips to take on board:
Get yourself a degree in Fashion Design or in Journalism.
Do a lot of freelance unpaid work for magazines and newspapers in order to build up your portfolio
Be flexible to work as an assistant for a stylist or photographer
Don’t be a fashion victim and above all don’t copy others
Find yourself a good photographer who might work with you in the future.
Don’t take fashion too seriously, otherwise it will ruin you.
And finally never give up, if you really want something keep working towards it and you will eventually get there.

As exciting as it might initially seem a party invitation is bound to spark panic attacks among the most fashionable breed. Once we’ve got over the delight of being invited we find ourselves being drawn into one fashion dilemma with one question in mind “What shall I wear?” We all know it is no use turning to our dearest friend knowing too well that she is going through the same nightmare herself, or indeed to our partner who is blissfully unaware of all the fuss going around him because let’s face it as far as he’s concerned “a dress is a dress”.

Before you allow panic to set in, take a moment or two to reflect on the occasion and the venue. Once you’ve cracked the dress code, going about choosing the appropriate outfit won’t be as difficult as you’d originally imagined.

Office and After Work Parties:
Stick to the “Casual-Chic Look" your aim is to strike a balance between the "late afternoon" and the "early evening glamour look". Mix your trousers’ suit or your office pencil skirt with a sequins top or a silk camisole, you can also change your morning outfit into a evening one by adding some glittery jewellery and by applying stronger make-up on.
