How to become a Fashion Editor?

I bet you’ve typed this question on every search engine before landing on Stilorama Fashion Editor Blog. How to become a fashion editor? and what does it take to get there?
I’ve seen countless articles describing in details all the technical steps that might eventually lead you to your dream job, but I have never come across one column or article describing what the fashion world is really like. What are the highs and lows of this most sought after job? And does working for fashion magazines has any connection with Ugly Betty?
Well let me get the record straight. Working as a fashion editor for a magazine or for a newspaper is not the most glamorous job a person can have, and it is by no means the most paid one; one thing for sure though, it is the most competitive and sometimes back-stabbing business you can come across. It is a world of fake beauty and surreal idealism, where reality does not exist and where fashion editors, stylists, photographers, models and designers get together to create a perfect world for the very few. You only need to take a peak behind closed doors to realise how insecure and gullible the fashion world is really like. The job of a fashion editor is to make sure that this fragile insecurity is never revealed to anyone outside this precious fashion circle. So the show always goes on, no matter how frustrating a fashion editor’s career might be or how under paid and over competitive it is. A fashion editor’s job is always on the line, as he or she knows that there is always a young fashion editor waiting for their fall so they can claim the thrown all to themselves. A fashion editor must always look fascinated and interested in every product launch and every fashion show. We visit London Fashion Week to check out who’s wearing what, and who’s got a new freelance job or indeed who’s lost their job and is back freelancing now.
Now don’t take me wrong, I love my job as a fashion journalist and amongst all the chaos that surrounds me on a daily basis, I wouldn’t give it up.
As for those of you who are dying to know the secret of how to become a fashion editor? Well there are no secrets really, just few tips to take on board:
Get yourself a degree in Fashion Design or in Journalism.
Do a lot of freelance unpaid work for magazines and newspapers in order to build up your portfolio
Be flexible to work as an assistant for a stylist or photographer
Don’t be a fashion victim and above all don’t copy others
Find yourself a good photographer who might work with you in the future.
Don’t take fashion too seriously, otherwise it will ruin you.
And finally never give up, if you really want something keep working towards it and you will eventually get there.

Chunky Necklaces & Accessories

For those of us who simply love costume jewellery, we are in for a treat this winter; Accessories have gone big and mighty, and according to my sources the trend is set to stay with us even next spring and summer. But before you rush to your nearest department store in the hope of finding the biggest necklace or bangle you can get your hands on, make sure you remember that there is a new way of wearing costume jewellery this winter. Remember that this year Size Matters! The bigger the accessory the better. The trend is also to wear more than one necklace at a time and to mix styles and textures like metal, satin and pearls, and velvet. Wear your big chunky necklaces over polo neck jumpers and also over your evening wear. To get you in the mood Stilorama Magazine spotted few catwalk trends to help decide on choosing your perfect costume jewellery.

Glamorous Party Wear

As exciting as it might initially seem a party invitation is bound to spark panic attacks among the most fashionable breed. Once we’ve got over the delight of being invited we find ourselves being drawn into one fashion dilemma with one question in mind “What shall I wear?” We all know it is no use turning to our dearest friend knowing too well that she is going through the same nightmare herself, or indeed to our partner who is blissfully unaware of all the fuss going around him because let’s face it as far as he’s concerned “a dress is a dress”.

Before you allow panic to set in, take a moment or two to reflect on the occasion and the venue. Once you’ve cracked the dress code, going about choosing the appropriate outfit won’t be as difficult as you’d originally imagined.

Office and After Work Parties:
Stick to the “Casual-Chic Look" your aim is to strike a balance between the "late afternoon" and the "early evening glamour look". Mix your trousers’ suit or your office pencil skirt with a sequins top or a silk camisole, you can also change your morning outfit into a evening one by adding some glittery jewellery and by applying stronger make-up on.

Business functions and post conference events:
Never underestimate the power of business networking, this could be your opportunity for mingling with professionals who might affect your career prospects or even promotion. Depending on where the event is being held, aim to achieve a classical and stylishly understated look. A tailored satin or velvet suit or a feminine pencil skirt with a embroidered top inspired by Hollywood screen legends should do the trick. Keep make-up to a minimum and avoid strong eye shadows and strong lipsticks.

Big Dinner Parties:
So you’ve been invited to New Year party at a lavish hotel what do you wear? Long or short feminine evening dresses are a good choice, this is your chance to experiment with colours and fabrics, avoid metallic trimmings and instead glamorise with jewellery, hair and make-up.

Finally…
Whether you’ve been invited to an office party or a lavish banquet, choose your accessories wisely and pay special attention to details like your hair, hands and feet.

The Tartan Trend

The Tartan trend is one of the most popular trends this winter. Fashion designers often choose tartan as one of their main looks of the winter season, and this year is no exception. This scottish inspired fabric also looks great on accessories like hats, shoes, shoes and belts. If you've never been a big fan of tartan clothes or accessories, my advice is to venture out of your comfort zone and go tartan mad this winter or at least this Christmas. The best thing about buying tartan clothes and accessories is that you can be assured that come next winter the trend will be as popular as this year, so make sure you add tartan on your shopping sales list, or even better you can shop online for tartan clothes and accessories by visiting stilorama magazine http://www.stilorama.com/

Credit Crunch…Designer Clothes VS High Street Brands

October 31st, 2008 Credit Crunch is all what I hear around me. It seems that the whole world has gone “Credit Crunch” mad…It has become the topic of the week the flavour of the month… I’ve lost count of the times I heard these two words come up in one sentence, from the barista who does the perfect cappuccino at the coffee bar next to my office, to the people who share the underground carriage with me to and from central London. Even my youngest daughter seems to have her own opinion about the credit crunch, “if I choose for you to buy me a cheaper dress will you get me the jumper I wanted, and then take me out for lunch?” she skillfully tried to negotiate with me when I took her out shopping over a week ago. I must admit that she got me thinking that afternoon about the snobbery we all suffer from. I mean how many of us would rather wear a designer label even if it meant that we had to spend half our wages on it, or even worse if it meant that we had to pay for it with our credit card; and why is it that none of us is willing to admit that we love shops which are kinder to our wallets?
My daughter’s comments stayed with me all afternoon, I wondered if she would still be thinking like this few years from now; when the pressures of fitting in as a teenager will spoil all that common sense that she had on this shopping afternoon. It even got me thinking about my spending habits and my snobbery towards some high street brands; and what does the credit crunch mean for a “shopping snob” like me?
I did follow my daughter’s advice, and she did get her cheaper dress… a jumper and the lunch she wanted.
So when it comes to the battle between designer clothes and high street brands, I have made my mind up and decided that I no longer wished to be a “shopping snob”; and thanks to so many high street shops who are currently obsessed with copying designer looks, I don’t really need to buy the real thing do I? So for now, I have gone all cheap and cheerful, and if you care to join me on my daily quest for catwalk designer looks at high street prices visit http://www.stilorama.com/ and shop happily ever after!

Fashion’s Response to Barack Obama’s Win.

I don’t often discuss my political views at fashion events, or write about them in Stilorama Magazine; but something made me change my mind couple of days ago; like most of my friends I stayed up most of the night following the US election results as they filtered through every news channel and internet site. I always followed the US election with interest, but this time it was different for all the obvious reasons and the non-obvious ones. First African-American US president…the end of an era…time for a change…
I didn’t have to wait long for the happy news. History was made and I, like million of others witnessed it! People from all over the world were swept by Barak Obama’s fever, it seemed that for at least couple of hours, the world global economy did not matter, or the awful truth about the credit crisis and job losses; falling retail sales figures or high food prices were not on anyone’s agenda, mind or lips on Wednesday morning. But like many headlines that come and go, Obama’s fever did not last much and after the party was over, we were all left standing reflecting on what the future might bring.
We are all hoping for a change; and yes we need a change, I for one would like to join the American people in hoping and believing that Barak Obama will bring the change to all of us; and as my work and life evolves around the fashion industry, I can’t wait to see what Barak Obama’s era will bring to the catwalks and to the fashion world. Are fashion designers going to embrace the change? Are we going to witness a revival of the late sixties fashion?
Where here’s is how I think Barak Obama’s term in the White House will affect fashion trends. For a start street fashion will be big in the next few years; mini skirts, bright coloured clothes, ruffles, lace, knitted fabrics, faded denim with embroidery and patch work. Slogan on T-shirts will make a big comeback, and fashion might become a visual stylish statement and maybe a way for the young generation to communicate with the old establishment. Clothes will become more affordable and more individual, as for fabrics, they will have an African inspired theme or appeal to them.
Whatever you might feel or think about Barak Obama’s victory, change has happened and I truly believe that it happened for the best. I think we can finally leave behind us the greedy decade and look forward to a simpler way of living, dressing and thinking.
I will be back in a day or two with the latest news and views about fashion and beauty trends; if you can’t wait that long visit our magazine site http://www.stilorama.com/

The day my blog disappeared

I've been blogging for nearly 6 months, and it didnt't take me long to get hooked and dedicated to my daily fashion editor blog; On Saturday morning I learnt a very hard lesson, when I discovered that my blog disappeared from the face of the internet. Like many bloggers, I was unaware of the white death page, the page when one day you try to log into your blog account, and bingo the page has gone...completely disappeared!

I spent many days and hours writing on my blog, and to see it all vanish in one second was hard to accept. I know...I know...I should have saved my work did a backup...
I tried to fix the disappearance of my blog but who was I kidding? I searched all search engines for an answer and when I got one it was all computer jargon, another language to me, a language that I couldn't begin to understand even if I really tried.
Luckily for me, my blog was reincarnated with the help of stilorama 's magazine site developer, and in a bid to save all my hard work I ended up with two blogs!

I will leave you with images from Stilorama Magazine from Chanel Spring/Summer 2009 fashion show in Paris.
I will be back tomorrow after I've recovered from my blog disappearance hangover, with my usual fashion blog fix, meanwhile for more fashion and beauty trends visit Stilorama Magazine site http://www.stilorama.com/
